When Dylan first reached out to me, he had one very important question: could I help him surprise his girlfriend, Connie, with a proposal she would never see coming? As a Rhode Island proposal photographer, my answer was, of course, yes. I love being part of the secret planning that happens behind the scenes before a proposal — there is something so special about knowing exactly what is about to happen while one person has absolutely no idea. Dylan was so excited to propose to Connie, and together we came up with a plan that would let him surprise her completely at his family home in Tiverton, Rhode Island.
The Plan: A Decoy Trip to Newport
Dylan told Connie he was taking her to Newport for the day — the kind of classic Rhode Island date that would make anyone suspect a ring might be involved. That was exactly the point. By pointing her toward Newport, Dylan bought himself the one thing every proposal needs: the element of surprise, hiding in plain sight.
The real location was much closer to home — his family’s own property in Tiverton, overlooking the water.
Going Undercover as a Land Surveyor
I arrived at 8:30 in the morning, hours before Connie would have any idea a camera was on the property. Dylan and I had one job: give Connie a reason not to think twice about a stranger walking around outside while she got ready inside.
So for one morning, I wasn’t a photographer. I was a land surveyor.
I walked the perimeter of the property, camera tucked away, ducking behind the house as I excitedly awaited the proposal. Connie assumed Dylan was giving me access to the property while she prepped for their “day trip to Newport.” One tiny detail she looked back on afterward: Dylan had moved her shoes near the back door instead of the front, so that when the moment came, she’d walk out toward the water instead of toward the driveway. Connie clocked it as odd, filed it under my boyfriend is weird sometimes, and kept getting ready.
That’s the thing about a well-planned surprise proposal: the couple only sees the strange little details in hindsight. In the moment, it just looks like another Sunday morning.
The Proposal Under the Tree
Dylan led Connie outside toward a single large maple tree at the edge of their property, with the Tiverton water stretched out behind them. She gasped the second she understood what was happening — that unmistakable, involuntary sound of someone realizing their whole life is about to change.
Dylan got down on one knee. Connie’s smile was the kind that’s impossible not to smile back at, even from behind a camera. When he stood back up, they wrapped each other in one of those long, full-body hugs where nobody wants to be the first to let go.
That’s when Connie noticed me for the first time — mid-hug, realizing the “land surveyor” from that morning had actually been documenting the whole thing.

Since Connie was already dressed and the light over the water was perfect along coastal Rhode Island, we didn’t waste the moment. We moved into a short engagement session right there in the field, then made our way down to the beach behind their house for a second set of portraits — no studio, no second location, just the property they already loved.
By the time I packed up and drove away, I caught one last look in my rearview mirror: Dylan and Connie walking into their foyer with the large windows, jumping up and down together. That image — pure, unposed, unstaged joy — is exactly why I photograph proposals the way I do. You can’t direct that kind of happiness. You can only be standing in the right spot when it happens.
