Engagement Session Preparation: Guide for Couples

Engagement session preparation is so much more than a chance to get beautiful photos for your save the dates. It is often the first time you will work with your wedding photographer and the perfect opportunity to become comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day.

One thing I hear from nearly every couple is, “We’re awkward in photos.”

The truth is that almost everyone feels that way at first. You do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. My job is to guide you every step of the way so your photos feel natural, genuine, and uniquely you.

If you are wondering how to prepare for your engagement session, here are the most common questions couples ask and my honest answers.

What to Wear for Engagement Session Preparation:

When it comes to engagement session preparation, one of the most common questions is what to wear.

My biggest piece of advice is to wear something that feels like you. The goal is to look like the best version of yourselves. If you need inspiration, here is my Pinterest board for outfit ideas.

Choose outfits that complement each other rather than match exactly. Soft neutrals, earth tones, classic textures, and timeless pieces tend to photograph beautifully. Avoid large logos, neon colors, and anything that feels overly trendy.

Many couples choose two outfits: one more elevated and one more casual. This creates variety in your gallery and allows you to show different sides of your personality.

The best engagement session preparation outfits are the ones that feel natural and comfortable rather than forced or overly styled.

Do I Have to Wear White?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about engagement photos is that brides must wear white. In reality, there are no rules. Many couples choose colors that reflect the season, the location, or their personal style.

Whether you choose a flowing white dress, a blue sundress, a black cocktail dress, or your favorite sweater and jeans, the most important thing is that you feel confident wearing it. Couples frequently share that they loved choosing outfits that felt true to them rather than following tradition.

Best Locations for Engagement Session Preparation Photos

Another important part of engagement session preparation is choosing the right location.

Maybe it is the beach where you spend your summers. Maybe it is the city where you had your first date. Maybe it is a historic estate, a coastal town, a mountain overlook, or simply a place with beautiful light.

For my New England couples, I recommend locations that offer a mix of scenery, movement, and timeless architecture such as coastal towns, beaches, or historic estates. The right location helps tell your story while creating a beautiful backdrop that will never feel dated.

What Time Should We Schedule Our Session?

Light is everything.

The most flattering light typically happens shortly before sunset. The soft, warm light creates the romantic glow that couples love.

Morning sessions can also be beautiful, especially during busy seasons when popular locations are crowded later in the day.

What If We Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?

Realistically, you probably will for the first few minutes.

That is completely normal.

Many couples arrive convinced they are the most awkward people on earth. Then twenty minutes later they are laughing, talking, and completely forgetting the camera is there.

The first part of every engagement session is about settling in and getting comfortable. I guide you with movement, conversation, and prompts that create genuine interaction rather than stiff poses. The best photos happen when you focus on each other, not the camera.

Should We Bring Anything?

A few small items can make a big difference.

Bring comfortable shoes if we will be walking between locations. Consider bringing water, a touch up makeup kit, a hairbrush, and any meaningful items you would like included in your session.

If your dog is part of your story, bring them along. If you got engaged on a sailboat, bring a bottle of champagne to celebrate. Personal details help make your session feel uniquely yours.

Should We Get Professional Hair and Makeup?

I highly recommend it.

Professional hair and makeup not only photograph beautifully, but they also help you feel more confident. Many brides schedule their engagement session around a hair and makeup trial for their wedding day, which is a great way to see how everything photographs.

Can You Use Engagement Photos Beyond Save the Dates?

Absolutely.

Many couples use their engagement photos on their wedding website, save the dates, guest books, welcome signs, framed artwork, and thank you cards.

Your engagement session is one chapter of your story. These photographs become part of your legacy together and deserve to be enjoyed long after your wedding day.

My Best Advice

Thoughtful engagement session preparation helps you feel relaxed, confident, and fully present during your session.

Spend the day together. Grab dinner afterward. Focus on enjoying each other’s company.

The most beautiful engagement photos are never about perfect poses or perfect outfits. They are about connection, laughter, and the season of life you are in right now.

Years from now, you will not remember whether your dress was white or blue. You will remember how it felt to be engaged to the love of your life and that is exactly what your engagement photos should capture.
