She was seemingly nervous. Clutching her champagne glass in one hand. It was time for her speech. Ashley’s mom, Sharon – a nickname her daughters have given her, was ready. Everyone circled around her. As she glanced at Ashley she let out a big smile and thanked everyone for making her daughter’s day so special. Then made a statement that everyone in the room could resonate with.
Latina women are strong. It is ingrained in us to be caretakers. From an early age we are taught to take care of our families, and those around us. However, for far too long we’ve been told to take care of everyone, naturally leaving ourselves last. Sharon was standing in front of Ashley, and a room full of her closest friends and family, reminding them to put themselves first. Reminding them to be strong throughout life, to live as we choose, and be unapologetic about it. After all Latina’s make life a little more sassy.
It’s really so much fun to be in a room full of lively Latinas who are ALL dressed to the nines…. even grandma! This culture teaches you to be sexy, embrace your charisma, and find your own way. Cheers to that!
